Dear supporters of the United Artists theater in Berkeley, CA:
As you know, last month the city's Zoning Adjustments Board (ZAB) gave final approval to the housing project that calls for the destruction of the palatial art deco UA theater on Shattuck Ave. (save for part of the facade and *possibly* part of the lobby).
We are appealing this decision to the City Council. There are a lot of questions about the legality of the zoning board approval and the city's nontransparent planning process leading up to that vote, as well as the city granting the developer a full exemption to CEQA.
We are raising funds to pay for the appeal, an update to our website, and possibly related measures. Our campaign is nearly two years old and despite all of the things we have accomplished, we have not sought donations until this point.
We can't guarantee victory before the City Council but feel this is a critical step to take in our campaign to rescue this magnificent theater from the wrecking ball.
Without the appeal, the theater could be torn down in a matter of months.
Even a small donation would help! GO FUND ME link:
We will keep you up to date on our progress. Thanks so much and please spread the word!
