Save the disc: Sony must keep physical PlayStation games after 2028
The Issue
For many PlayStation gamers like me, the push to go fully digital by 2028 feels like a threat to our freedom of choice. Sony, with its high digital sales numbers, might think that means we no longer want discs. But for us, it’s about having the OPTION! Even those who primarily buy digital games appreciate the security that a physical game disc offers. Imagine being able to buy a used game, lend it to a friend, or truly own a game that you’ve purchased, not just a license to use it. These are all benefits that digital cannot fully replace.
Remember the power of choice. Physical games give us the ability to play older titles without worrying that they will disappear from an online store. They let us enjoy a game even if we're without internet. We can create a collection, displayed proudly as part of our gaming history. This is more than nostalgia; it is about maintaining control over what we buy with our hard-earned money.
The digital world has undeniable benefits—instant access, no need for physical storage space, seamless updates—but it shouldn’t come at the cost of eliminating our choices. Providing both options can keep all types of gamers satisfied, help preserve the history of gaming, and ensure that our rights as consumers are protected.
Sony, we urge you to reconsider plans to phase out physical PlayStation games. Extend support and production beyond 2028. Retain physical disc drives in your future consoles. By doing so, you respect the diverse needs and preferences of your customer base, valuing each gamer as an individual with unique desires and requirements.
Please sign this petition to remind Sony that gamers value choice. Join us in telling Sony that keeping physical games as an option is important for us all. Help preserve the legacy, choice, and freedom that we've grown to cherish in the gaming world!
