Hazardous Substances
Some potentially hazardous products are commonly used for grounds maintenance: pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers and pest control products, for example. These need to be controlled to ensure their safe employment.
Measures include:
• ensuring that work involving the use of poisons is carried out during non-term time unless it is urgent
• avoiding the storage of hazardous products on site
• clearly labelling all products and storing them securely.
All grounds maintenance chemicals and poisons should be procured, stored, handled, used and disposed of in a way that complies with the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002. Information about this can be found in the COSHH topic (https://app.croneri.co.uk/topics/coshh/indepth#DCAM-239263
Wherever possible, the best way of maintaining safety is to avoid the use of hazardous substances by using alternative measures.Examples include the use of weed suppression mulch and sheeting or organic growing concepts rather than chemical weed killers. If the use of a hazardous substance is unavoidable, the least hazardous ones possible should be used.
