The issue

As an independent curator, gallery manager, exhibition producer and craftsperson the slow erosion of the sector and quiet quitting of funding for both makers and supporting exhibition venues and institutions has been increasing in the last years. As someone who has worked in the sector for over 20 years, the Australian Design Centre (ADC) has always maintained strong connections to designers, makers, and craftspeople. Through its exhibitions, public programs, learning resources, tours, digital content production, publications, and retail activities, the ADC plays an essential role in representing and showcasing creative work across Australia. It deserves to remain a vital part of the Australian visual arts and crafts ecology.

The Australian Design Centre is more than just a space; it is a beacon for creativity that ignites fresh ideas and cultural vibrancy. As one of the major organisations in contemporary craft and design, ADC plays a pivotal role in developing and supporting Australia's makers and designers. It builds audiences for their work across the country and internationally through its diverse platforms, which include exhibitions, festivals, touring programmes, retail opportunities, publishing ventures, and educational resources.

However, the ADC is now faced with the imminent threat of closure by 30 June 2026. This closure would not only affect the Centre but would also leave a significant void in Australia's cultural landscape. It would disrupt the crucial development and promotion of innovative design practices that are integral to our Australian artistic identity.

The ADC has been instrumental in nurturing Australia's creative community. With the closure, countless emerging and established artists would lose a significant platform that has supported their journey. The Centre's closure would impact not only the individuals involved directly but also the communities and audiences who gain so much from their interaction with arts and crafts.

We must act urgently to prevent this cultural loss. We need to ensure that the Australian Design Centre continues its invaluable work for generations to come. I urge you to support this petition to save the ADC, advocating for the necessary funding and support to keep its doors open and its programs thriving.

Sign this petition today to stand with the Australian Design Centre and help secure its future as a cornerstone of our nation's artistic and cultural expression.
