Happy hump day, hope you're all staying warm out there! Update and reminder that feedback on the Sydney Gateway concept design is due this Friday!
We've been discussing the concept design (including various local councils) over the last few weeks and here is our summary -
We thank everyone on this petition who provided feedback early in the process - your feedback worked! - there is now a strong commitment to provide a direct replacement route for the section of the Alexandra Canal cycleway we are losing.
However, disappointingly the project does appear to improve or build on the existing active travel network.
We've identified major missing active travel links in the project:
1. A connection from St Peters Interchange to the Alexandra Canal cycleway
2. A direct, crossing of the Cooks River from the South towards the CBD
3. Direct connections from the Alexandra Canal cycleway to T1, T2, T3 and beyond, to the Bayside Council network
4. A direct connection between Coward St and Sydenham station (and future Metro)
Following community concern, we thank the Sydney Gateway for outlining the proposed detours during construction, and
5. Urge that safe connections be developed and maintained during construction.
The Sydney Gateway outlines its benefits are to make journeys easier, faster, safer, but it appears to have neglected part of the community - people cycling and walking.
We encourage you to provide feedback supporting these 5 points, and encourage Sydney Gateway to work closely with Bicycle NSW, BIKEast, City of Sydney, Bayside and Inner West Councils to ensure that the future active travel network outlined in Future Transport 2056, Sydney's Green Grid, and Greater Sydney Commission is implemented and community access is maintained.
Email sydneygateway@rms.nsw.gov.au or update the interactive map before the weekend.
Thank you everyone for your ongoing efforts at supporting cycling and active travel in Sydney. See you out there!
