Let’s keep going!
Everyone was talking about the England shirt on Friday. It was the top headline, and on the front AND back pages of major newspapers. The Cross of St George is so powerful a symbol that it’s caused Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer to actually agree on something publicly, uniting behind our flag. The nation has shown their outrage over the FA and Nike’s blinding short-sightedness, and lack of consideration for the fans.
However, the 24-hour news cycle has now taken this cause out of the spotlight. We mustn’t allow the FA and Nike to shirk their responsibilities to this nation’s fans, players and history, and to gladly watch the national conversation forget and move on. Momentum is still high, and we have to keep it going. I implore you: share this petition as widely as you can. Write to the FA and Nike. Email your MP. It will force them to fix their mistake. Let’s keep this moving!
The fantastic support from signatories has fuelled the conversation. This petition has been directly written about by Sky, GB News, the Daily Mail, and mentioned by countless other outlets. We’ve reached a size that has made this petition impossible to ignore, and I would like to thank you each individually for making this so. This petition and your support really are making a difference.
They’re feeling the pressure. The FA and Nike have each put out statements containing nonsensical excuses, acknowledging the offence they have cause, yet displaying no current intent to take responsibility for their misstep. The longer they go on without correcting the Cross on the shirt, the more out of touch they show themselves to be with English fans and players. I was amazed to see the fall in Nike’s share price yesterday, and so were they. This petition will force them to change.
Nike corrected their mistake to not stock Lioness Mary Earps’ shirt in reply to a petition just like this one. When that reached 30,000 signatures it was a featured item in the BBC, the Evening Standard and the Independent, as well as the outlets that have covered our petition. The bigger we get, the harder it will be for them to ignore us, and we will fix the national shirt. They listened to fans before, and they will again now.
It’s a small vinyl transfer – it’s an easy fix!
So, once more, I encourage you to keep pushing. Share this petition as widely as you can, boycott Nike and the present shirt, and take heart that the FA and Nike have corrected a mistake like this in the recent past, and they will do so again here.
In the spirit of '66,
Alf
