Save the Shepherds Bush Market Businesses CampaignLondon, Regno Unito
28 feb 2024

There is hope that the Mayor of London will now step in and fight for democracy, protecting the multicultural and ethnically diverse businesses of Shepherd’s Bush Market.

In a few days the change.org petition “Call on Sadiq Khan to protect Shepherd's Bush Market”
will be issued to the Mayor of London with a plea that sense and democracy must prevail, and that the Mayor of London should quash the developer’s destructive planning desires on Shepherd’s Bush Market land.

The change.org ‘Call on Sadiq Khan to protect Shepherd's Bush Market’ petition may be viewed and supported via

Please, insist that the ethnically diverse businesses of Shepherd’s Bush Market must be protected and be allowed to retain their rights, their TfL lease terms and conditions, and given sufficient legal safeguards to maintain their business tenancies for the long-term future.

Both local residents and businesses are outraged and shocked by the Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s support for the wealthy developer’s planning application which causes damage and devastation to many.

The developer’s plans have been described as destructive madness and yet the Hammersmith & Fulham Council is considered to be failing to adequately consult, defend, and serve the voting Shepherd’s Bush community.

As the developer is the landlord of Shepherd’s Bush Market, considered authoritarian aspirations to force control over the Shepherd’s Bush Market traders have been discovered in the legal ‘small print’ of newly drafted lease proposals.

The former Chairman of the Shepherd’s Bush Market Tenants’ Association ‘SBMTA’ – Mr James Horada, commented, “These drafted tenancy agreements that are being recently presented for proposed Licences, Tenancy At Will Agreements, and Leases, by the developer, are of deep concern and may be considered as a devil’s agreement that may bind and prison the market businesses to be a slave to all of the landlord’s demands and wishes. These agreements may be viewed to be extremely prejudiced and if a market business signs such an agreement, it may prove to be a curse for the market trader’s livelihood and future”.

Long standing market businesses who currently hold TfL leases have been strongly advised not to relinquish their tenancy agreements to the landlord as they are entitled to renew their agreements retaining exactly the same terms and conditions.

Despite the developer’s bullish approach of wanting the businesses to settle for lesser tenancy arrangements and possibly infringe on the traders’ human rights,  the market businesses must each seek the impartial and prudent legal advice of their solicitor to ensure that they are not bamboozled by the developer’s words and misdirection. The market businesses’ current TfL lease should be permitted to be renewed with exactly the same terms and conditions. The developer’s insistence that this is not possible is not need but greed.

The awful recent eviction of a beloved market trader selling children's books may have reminded us just how ruthless the developers may be.

This BBC News Report is example of how many livelihoods have been ruined.

The Mayor of London must be encouraged now to actively stop the developer.
