We want to be transparent with our community and supporters about the current status of Sandbox Symphony. Despite our ongoing efforts, we have not been able to resolve the issue with the Chicago Park District.
The Park District has provided us with the following options for hosting Sandbox Symphony in 2024:
- Keeping the stage off the sand, but allowing activities such as yoga to stay on the beach. (This doesn't allow us to transform the beach into gallery of art activations essential to mission.)
- Not changing the footprint and paying the $40,000 beach impact fee.
- Choosing an alternate location for the event. (What's Sandbox Symphony without being on the sand?)
These options are not conducive to the essence of Sandbox Symphony. Our event needs to be on the sand to preserve its unique atmosphere and impact. There is no valid reason why our community-driven, inclusive event should be subjected to a $40,000 beach impact fee. We have also not been provided with clear information about whether this fee has been imposed on other events or if it is uniquely targeted at us.
Sandbox Symphony is a beloved community event that fosters unity, creativity, and well-being among residents. It should remain on the sand where it belongs. We are calling on the Chicago Park District to reconsider these options and allow us to continue hosting Sandbox Symphony without the prohibitive fees and constraints.
We appreciate your continued support and will keep you updated on any further developments. Thank you for standing with us in solidarity, preserving the spirit of Sandbox Symphony.
