As I'm sure many of you are already aware, the official script of Ride the Cyclone has been edited to completely cut out Ricky's disability. Ironically, their reasoning for this is likely to make the role more "accessible" to able-bodied actors. I won't go into how backwards that is, but what matters is that the character of Ricky Potts is no longer physically disabled.
This was almost certainly done in retaliation to Yannick-Robin speaking up about the ableism they faced while in the McCarter Theater production of RTC. This is blatant disability erasure in an attempt to make things easier for themselves, and it just goes to show that we need to stand our ground, and stand with Yannick.
The writers are hoping that we will accept these changes, stop protesting the casting of able-bodied actors in the role of Ricky Potts, and let them off the hook. This is exactly what we can't do. We need to show them that we won't let this go, that it's something important that can't just be swept under the rug. We need to be louder than ever about this.
Disabled representation in media- musicals especially- is already so rare. We can't let them take this from us. Fight back. Save Ricky Potts.
