Dear all

I want to update you on some important developments regarding the Council’s plans for Rathfarnham Castle stables and courtyards.

The Council provided guided tours of the Castle courtyards recently and advised us that the re-development is being reconsidered, with a view to creating a new masterplan which may include the refurbishment of the courtyard buildings. We were told that no plans have been compiled yet, no contracts signed and everything is on the table. We may yet be able to save Seán Keating Garden and influence the redevelopment of Rathfarnham Castle courtyards and stables.

This has all come about as a result of the significant public pressure that has been brought to bear in recent months. Thank you all for playing your part in achieving this welcome development by signing this petition and contacting your local representatives about the matter.

The Council is now seeking any and all ideas and suggestions for what should form part of the redevelopment. They have opened an online consultation which will continue until 26th May. It will also be possible to make suggestions on paper in Ballyroan Library.

We all have our own views on exactly what should be included as part of this redevelopment. However, a  number of local residents associations have come together and have agreed the following key principles, which we would encourage you support as part of your own submissions:

  1. Retain (and revitalise) Seán Keating Garden
  2. Prioritise refurbishment of stables and old courtyard buildings (southern and northern courtyards) over a new build
  3. Prioritise heritage, cultural and community use of the site over commercial use
  4. Use existing northern courtyard for any new car park
  5. Create a venue for the arts in Cromwell’s Fort
  6. Create cultural & historical exhibits onsite (incl. at Seismograph House)
  7. Prioritise connectivity with Rathfarnham Village

The time to act is NOW. Whether or not you agree with the key points above, it is vital now that we all make submissions. There are so many great ideas out there which would unlock the potential of this unique cultural site. This is our key opportunity to influence the overall direction of this project.

I will keep you updated over the coming weeks with further developments. Please share the online consultation with friends, neighbours and local groups who may be interested.

All the best

Ciarán Ahern
