Save Prestwick Bing - demand a public consultation into future use
The Issue
This petition calls on South Ayrshire Council to ensure there is widespread public consultation on future uses of the former Glenburn bing site in Prestwick.
Recent community-led proposals to enhance access to the site have been blocked as the land is being reserved for a large solar-farm proposal by South Ayrshire Council's Economic Development Team - despite a lack of publicly available information on this.
Although the site is neglected and suffers from anti-social behaviour, it is highly valued by many residents as a large and accessible area of greenspace, with trees, wildlife and calm. This is particularly important to residents in the immediate neighbourhood who have limited access to other greenspace due to the location of the airport runways and industrial parks.
Local people have demonstrated their desire to improve the site through a series of volunteer led litter picks during the last year.
A public consultation would ensure that effective decisions can be made on improving access to the site, such as developing trails, or restricting access to the site, with technology to generate energy. There is a clear need to develop renewable energy, but this is a false choice. There is no need to compromise quality greenspace when other suitable locations exist locally.
A public consultation would ensure that local opinion is considered before any wider development is approved or dismissed.
