As reported in The Herald yesterday, sixteen high schools in Glasgow are starting the new school year without any library staff, as consultations are still ongoing regarding Glasgow LIfe’s proposals to remove school librarian posts from each school. According to Glasgow Life, the libraries in the affected schools “will be accessible to young people and staff throughout” however this is a far cry from having a staffed library with professionally qualified and trained staff. It also begs the question as to what the current situation is in the other fourteen high schools in Glasgow. The EIS, Scotland’s biggest teaching union, reject Glasgow Life’s proposals recognising that “qualified librarians in school libraries are vitally important for the positive impact they have on students’ academic and personal development”.
