Last call! Help us complete The People’s Red Squirrel Banknote Collection

Marie Carter-RobbDurham, ENG, United Kingdom

There are just a few days left to add your red squirrel to The People’s Red Squirrel Banknote Collection.

What began as our slightly cheeky response to the Bank of England leaving the red squirrel off its wildlife banknote shortlist has grown into a wonderfully eclectic collection of paintings, drawings, photographs, sketches and sculpture from people across Britain.

And it has even made the newspapers.

Last weekend, the iWeekend Newspaper featured the Collection, under the rather brilliant headline “Squirrelled away from banknote”, showcasing some of your entries and the story behind the project.

But we’re not finished yet.

Entries close at midnight on Monday 31 August, and we would love one final flurry of red squirrels before we close the Collection.

You do not need to be an artist. In fact, that is rather the point.

We want beautiful paintings and five-minute doodles. Children’s drawings and photographs. Pencil sketches and gloriously wonky squirrels. If you care about Britain’s native red squirrel, we want yours.

TO ENTER:
Simply email your entry to hello@saveourreds.uk by midnight on Monday 31 August.

You can see some of the wonderful entries already received in our online gallery:

The People’s Red Squirrel Banknote Collection

After entries close, we’ll bring the completed Collection together and share it with the Bank of England.

Because beneath all the fun lies something important.

The red squirrel is not simply a Scottish species. It is a British native, disappearing from landscapes where generations once knew it as an everyday part of the countryside.

The Bank of England may have left the red squirrel out.

More than 109,000 of us are making sure it isn’t forgotten.

So, one last time: pencils, paints and cameras at the ready!

Deadline: midnight, Monday 31 August.
