Save our community alligators from unnecessary harm
Save our community alligators from unnecessary harm
The Issue
I saw a picture when the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) attempted to catch and kill the two alligators that have lived peacefully in our community retention pond. This was an unsettling sight, and it deeply disturbed me because these alligators embody the serene wildlife essence that many of us value living alongside.
These alligators have never shown aggression towards humans. In fact, they exhibit fear of us and maintain a healthy distance. Their behavior aligns perfectly with normal wildlife activity, making them much safer to coexist with than potentially unknown, more aggressive alligators that might take their place if they were removed.
We must acknowledge that we moved into their habitat, not the other way around. The retention pond is their home, and their presence can be safely managed when respected. Removing them could lead to the arrival of a larger, more aggressive alligator that could pose actual danger to our families.
To the Homeowners Association (HOA), I plead with you to reconsider your decision to relocate or eliminate these creatures. With better understanding and education on how to coexist with them, we can protect our local biodiversity without compromising safety. Let's focus on fostering a community that embraces and respects wildlife in a responsible manner.
I urge you to pause and review the current decision-making process regarding these alligators. Let’s engage with wildlife experts, explore non-lethal methods of population control, and invest in educating residents on how to coexist with alligators safely. These actions not only preserve our neighborhood's ecological balance but also uphold our moral commitment to peaceful coexistence with nature.
Please sign this petition to urge the HOA to pause any action against these alligators and ensure they can continue to peacefully exist in our community.
