At the end of the academic year 2018, the BA Honours Acting and Musical Theatre courses, currently validated by Northumbria University and delivered by New College Lanarkshire Performing Arts Department will come to an end. This decision to remove validation of these valued and essential performing arts courses is one that will have a major impact on young emerging artists across Scotland. It also means that degree level performing arts training in Scotland is extremely limited, with only a handful of options available to students looking to further their training.
The BA courses at New College Lanarkshire provide a much-needed route for students unable to cover the high costs of traditional drama school training, most of which are outwith Scotland and subsequently aren’t covered by SAAS funding. Since their inception, the BA courses at New College Lanarkshire have provided students with a secure and consolidated knowledge of theatre practice in the specific areas of technique, repertoire, audition, showcase and performance. Over the years students have had the opportunity to collaborate with many industry professionals and establishments in a variety of vocational contexts. During the academic year 2016 – 2017 students at New College Lanarkshire performed in 21 productions to audiences of over 17,000. Losing the BA courses will have an impact not only on the student’s essential training but the cultural diversity so needed in Scotland. The course provides programmes in which students can test out and develop their skills, working methods and principles as performers in practice-based project work that includes opportunities for reflective evaluation.
We are looking for and welcome your help and support in our cause to protect the BA courses at New College Lanarkshire and to continue to allow performing arts students, from every area of Scotland, the opportunity to further their training.
