Maties Equestrian Club is facing “de-recognition as a sports club” and we need your help to keep the horses part of the university ! 

Maties Equestrian Club is over 40 years old, largely pays its own way and has 17 horses cared for.

Out of the blue we have been suddenly informed that we will be “derecognised as a Maties Sport Club” citing “low student membership and non-relevance as a student sport offering.”

Actually, we have really top competitive riders (including a South African National endurance rider and competitive showjumpers) and also members who just love riding for fun.

Our student club member numbers are actually very good and growing very fast! 

We also reach a lot of students who are not club members – who come for a ‘bucket list’ ride or just stop by to spend time in a safe, equine environment. 

We offer all students and Stellenbosch residents super affordable outrides on our beautiful mountain! We do a lot of community work too. 

Or we just bring smile to your face when you see us on the mountain or walking through town on our horses for a coffee! 

“Derecognizing” Maties Equestrian Club might destroy the years of volunteer work and substantial financial contributions made by the members to build our stables, arenas and club.

We just want the right to continue existing as a recognised university sports club and keep serving Stellenbosch students, staff and the broader community!
