Manila Bay is an important part of our environment, supporting marine life, local communities, and the livelihoods of many fisherfolk. Although years of cleanup efforts have removed much of the visible garbage, Manila Bay still faces serious pollution problems. A clean shoreline does not necessarily mean clean or safe water. In some areas, fecal coliform levels remain above safe standards, while untreated wastewater, sewage, and garbage from surrounding communities and rivers continue to flow into the bay.

Plastic pollution is also a major concern. Plastic waste can clog drainage systems, worsen flooding during typhoons, damage marine ecosystems, and affect the livelihood of fisherfolk. As plastics break down, microplastics can also enter the marine food chain. At the same time, large-scale reclamation projects may place additional pressure on the bay's already fragile ecosystem.

Because of these continuing problems, Manila Bay needs more than occasional cleanups. We call for stricter plastic regulations, proper sewage and wastewater treatment, improved waste management, regular water-quality monitoring, and responsible regulation of reclamation projects. Authorities must address the sources of pollution and strictly enforce environmental laws.
