FINAL UPDATE : ORANGE CITY STREET, NAGPUR, THE TREES HAVE STARTED FALLING. WE FAILED TO SAVE THEM.

AFTER TWO YEARS OF RTIs, REPRESENTATIONS, COURTS & PUBLIC MOVEMENTS

For more than two years, we raised our voices to protect the remaining green landscape of (London) Orange City Street, Nagpur.

We filed RTIs.
We submitted representations and objections.
We collected documents and information.
We approached the authorities.
We took the issue to the courts.
We organised peaceful public movements.
And thousands of citizens stood with us.

Yet today, the reality is painful:

The trees have started falling.

And as citizens who fought to protect them, we have to say it honestly:

WE FAILED TO SAVE THEM. 🌳💔
But failure to save every tree does not mean we should stop asking questions.

In fact, the questions are more important than ever.

❗ WHAT HAPPENS NOW?
We must demand complete transparency regarding:

🌱 The actual tree census of the entire Orange City Street project
🌳 The number of trees already removed and those still standing
📊 The actual compensatory plantation data
📍 The exact locations where plantation has been carried out
🌱 The number of saplings that have actually survived
🌳 Their species, age, growth and survival status
📑 Compliance with applicable tree-protection and environmental requirements
🏗️ The environmental implications of the remaining plots and future phases
🌿 Protection of the remaining green areas wherever possible

A plantation figure on paper cannot automatically replace the ecological value of an established mature tree.

A mature tree is not equivalent to a sapling merely because both are counted as “one tree.”

🌿 THIS WAS NEVER JUST ABOUT TREES.
This was about one of the few remaining significant urban green stretches in the heart of Nagpur.

It was about:

🌳 Urban canopy
🌡️ Heat mitigation
🌬️ Air and dust regulation
💧 Soil and water functions
🐦 Urban biodiversity
🌱 Carbon sequestration
🏙️ A more liveable city

Nagpur is developing rapidly.

But development should not mean that every remaining green space becomes expendable.

⚖️ THE LEGAL & PUBLIC RECORD MUST CONTINUE.
The matter has received judicial scrutiny, and the concerns raised by citizens regarding tree data, plantation and the project's environmental implications must continue to be examined through the appropriate legal and administrative processes.

Our responsibility now is to document what happens next.

We will continue to seek transparency regarding the remaining plots, future development, tree-felling records and compensatory plantation.

You proved that citizens can raise difficult questions about the future of their city.

🌳 WE FAILED TO SAVE THESE TREES.
BUT WE MUST NOT FAIL TO PROTECT WHAT REMAINS.

The trees may be falling.

But the questions remain.

The records remain.

The responsibility remains.

And the remaining green spaces of Nagpur still deserve our protection.
