In late March, I filed an RTI with IRDAI on whether insurers can issue medical policies to organ recipients and living donors. Of the five points I raised, IRDAI sidestepped the first four by claiming I was “seeking an opinion”—despite my wording: “Please confirm if...”
Still, they shared resolutions that don’t prohibit such policies. Yet, they’ve never clearly directed insurers to offer coverage to recipients and donors—though they do endorse tech-assisted surgeries, including robotic surgery which is being used in organ transplant these days.
To my final question—asking for data on medical policies issued to recipients and donors since 2019—IRDAI replied: “We do not have the information.” If not them, then who?
The good news: NOTTO has stepped in and asked IRDAI to ensure coverage for organ recipients and donors. That’s a major win for us. Now it’s up to the government to act—and finally secure our right to be insured.
I understand it was working on it. The conflict at the LOC, may delay the process but not derail it.
