On 16 August 2024, we attended a meeting organized by NOTTO, bringing together doctors, insurers, the IRDAI, and organ donation NGOs in a positive and proactive environment. This was the second day of a two-part event, the first of which took place a few weeks earlier. We were invited to participate in the second day of discussions.
The meeting was conducted with respect and an open mind, allowing everyone to speak, listen, discuss challenges, and propose solutions. Our suggestions regarding medical insurance policies for post-transplant recipients and living donors, as well as financial aid for their post-transplant treatment, were received with empathy and understanding. Additionally, the issue of covering hospital charges for the families of cadaver donors was discussed.
NOTTO’s team, led by Dr. Anil Kumar, along with senior doctors specializing in organ transplants, members of IRDAI, and representatives from various insurance companies, participated in the discussions. It was heartening to hear the consensus that all stakeholders—cadaver donors, living donors, and transplant recipients—require financial support.
The meeting concluded on a positive note, and once the minutes are shared with those present, we will update everyone on the final decisions.
