Thanks to everyone who signed this petition, those people who contacted the council directly and support from the local MP and councillors, Kirklees Council made the announcement below announcing that they are continuing to fund Little Deer Woods. This is wonderful news and we would also like to thank the council staff who listened to the concerns of the people who have in the past and continue to use this amazing place.

It has now been agreed that Kirklees Council will continue to support Duke of Edinburgh Award activities for young people at Little Deer Wood in Mirfield, following an official announcement on Monday 26th February 2024.

As local authorities across the country face unprecedented financial challenges, Kirklees Council has had to consider how it funds outdoor learning activities for local young people, including those with disabilities and additional needs.

Following engagement with all stakeholders, the council has committed to continuing to support local young people to pursue the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at Little Deer Wood and at Almondbury.

The centre at Little Deer Wood and the Outdoor Learning team specialises in offering activities for young people, including those children and young people with additional needs who may otherwise not be able to benefit from outdoor learning experiences.

Young people in Kirklees can take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme through schools, colleges and groups across the borough. The council’s decision for Little Deer Wood means that the award remains accessible to children and young people with sensory, learning or physical disabilities, including those with the most complex needs for which most centres cannot cater.

The council prioritises the people who need our support the most and we know that so many young people with additional needs benefit from the inclusive, safe and positive experiences offered by the team at Little Deer Wood.

We are committed to providing our children, young people and families with a range of activities, respite and short breaks and Little Deer Wood and the work of the outdoor learning team has an important role in this ambition.

We want to work with you and all the partners who have expressed their support for the team to develop the best possible outdoor learning experience with our extremely limited resources.
