Hello,
This is the final update from the team at Leicestershire Conservatives about our petition to say NO to a city expansion.
First a big thank you to you and all of the 9,585 residents who've signed our petition, your support is greatly appreciated. We will now be sending the final tally to the Local Government Minister.
Even at this late stage, of the LGR process, we believe that, our petition shows how strong the depth of local feeling is about the unwarranted expansion of the City into the surrounding districts and boroughs, which may still influence the final outcome.
So once again thank you for your support.
We'd also like to take this opportunity to inform you about another important local campaign we are running:-
The Issue
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, Rupert Matthews, has recently announced that he is going to spend £2million of taxpayers cash, to commission private security guards, with no power of arrest or accountability, to be put on the high streets around our area.
We believe that Leicestershire residents deserve more real police officers on our streets, not £2 million spent on private security guards with no powers of arrest.
Private security staff can only observe and report incidents, meaning police officers still have to attend crimes afterwards. That means taxpayers are effectively paying twice.
Instead of outsourcing public safety, this money should be invested directly into recruiting and training fully warranted police officers who can prevent crime, investigate offences, arrest suspects, and keep our communities safe.
At a time when residents are deeply concerned about anti-social behaviour, shoplifting, rural crime and rising violence, every penny of the policing budget should strengthen frontline policing, not create a second-tier security service.
More police officers means:
• More visible patrols
• Faster response times
• Greater crime prevention
• Safer communities
We are calling on the Leicestershire Police and Crime Commissioner to scrap this proposal and put the £2 million back where it belongs, into real policing for Leicestershire.
To show your support , please sign the petition today and help us fight for more police, not private security.
