Media coverage of the March For Humanities at Stony Brook University

Dear friends and colleagues, thank you for your support against the administration’s plan to suspend Humanities programs at Stony Brook University and thank you all for showing up at the impressive protest march that took place at the campus on Wednesday, May 10th. As you know, Sacha Kopp, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, announced a plan to suspend Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies, European Studies, Hispanic Languages and Literature, and Theater programs. This as a result of financial constrains of 1.5 million dollars –which is less than 1% of the annual budget of the university. This contradicts not only the (costly publicized) university’s diversity plan, but the university commitment with academic excellence, since programs as HLL and CLCC are well known at national and international level for their outstanding performances. Wednesday’s march was peaceful and colorful and showed the just indignation of students and faculty as well against this unilateral decision made without following the due process established in SBU mechanisms of shared governance.
