Many of you have asked, “Has this happened before?” Unfortunately, the answer is yes — and the results were devastating.

In 2007, the Brazos River Authority (BRA) shut down the Morris Sheppard hydro plant at Possum Kingdom Lake. That decision — sold as “drought management” — allowed BRA to drain water, sell off lakefront land, and reallocate water to industry.

As a result, Lake Granbury fell 9 feet below normal and Possum Kingdom dropped 13+ feet. Property values collapsed, marinas and tourism dried up, and local taxpayers were left holding the bag. Meanwhile, insiders and corporations profited.

Now, the same playbook is being used at Lake Whitney - With the same INVESTORS!!

BRA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are pushing to lower Whitney’s conservation pool to 512 feet.
Just like Granbury, this would create “extra storage” — not for families, but so BRA can sell more water to industry.
The biggest beneficiaries? Data centers and private power deals (like DFW10 and Calpine), backed by Wall Street giants such as BlackRock and KKR.

The risk: Whitney could be locked into permanently low levels — devastating property values, tourism, and our communities.

Bottom line:

What happened at Granbury and Possum Kingdom is a warning: once the water is reallocated, the lakes never recover. The powerful profit, while local citizens pay the price.

We can’t allow Lake Whitney to be the next victim.

Stand with us. Share this update. Demand that BRA and USACE put communities before corporations.
