Save Kaziranga Movement Latest Update: A Peaceful Meeting, a Heavy Police Presence

The Save Kaziranga Movement continues to grow, and today brought another important development from Bokakhat.

People gathered at the Mising Rest House in Bokakhat to hold a peaceful meeting and demand the release of Pranab Doley. But when they reached the venue, they found the rest house locked.

Soon after, a large police deployment arrived, with multiple buses, helmets and full protective gear.

The meeting at the rest house could not take place. But the people did not stop. Nearly a thousand people gathered near Pranab Doley’s house and continued the meeting there.

Why are people demanding Pranab’s release?
Pranab Doley has been one of the main figures of the Save Kaziranga Movement, standing with local communities and speaking out against the proposed hotel project near Kaziranga.

He was arrested on July 12 in connection with the protests and was later granted bail on July 29.

But on July 30, instead of being released, he was detained again under the National Security Act (NSA).

The larger issue is not simply about one person. It is about land, livelihoods, conservation, development and the right of local communities to have a voice in decisions that affect them.

The movement is also demanding that the Eco-Sensitive Zone around Kaziranga should not be reduced to make way for projects that could put further pressure on the park and its surrounding ecosystem.

We are not against development.

We want responsible and sustainable development, meaningful consultation with local communities, protection of Kaziranga’s ecology and wildlife corridors, and respect for people's democratic rights.

Today's gathering shows that the movement is not disappearing.
