We have already said it very clearly: The death sentence against Jamshid Sharmahd is absolutely unacceptable. Not only is the death penalty cruel, inhumane and degrading, Jamshid Sharmahd never had even the rudiment of a fair trial: he had no access to freely chosen legal counsel. The circumstances of his arrest and transfer to Iran have not been clarified to this day. The public display of Mr. Sharmahd amounted to a prejudgement. Iran has repeatedly denied us consular access and also access to the trial dates.
From the very beginning, we have repeatedly and at a high level advocated for Mr. Sharmahd. We will not let up in this commitment. We call on Iran, through all channels available to us, to remedy the deficiencies in the appeal proceedings, to correct the verdict accordingly and to refrain from imposing the death penalty.
