Petition updateSave Irish hares from cruel coursingProtest against politicians who rejected bill to ban cruel coursing -
Irish Council Against Blood SportsMullingar, Ireland
15 Jul 2016
Please join us at 2pm on Thursday July 21st for a demonstration at the gates of Dail Eireann. We plan to tell the TDs who recently voted down the bill to ban cruel hare coursing that they should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Their rejection of the bill was a clear vote for animal cruelty and ensures that the suffering will continue for hares. Our protest will coincide with the start of a long summer break for TDs. While they depart to enjoy their holidays, it will certainly be no holiday for the Irish Hare. The Minister for Arts and Heritage is poised to issue another licence which will allow thousands of hares to be netted from the wild and used as live bait for greyhounds to chase. Captured hares will suffer fear and stress when caught in nets, kept in unnatural captivity and forced to run for their lives in front of the dogs. Some will sustain painful injuries and die when hit and mauled. And the threat remains for hares released after coursing - they are at risk of dying from stress-related capture myopathy. We are outraged that 114 TDs lacked the compassion to support a ban on coursing. That it continues in 2016 is Ireland's absolute shame. There will be a selection of placards and banners on the day of the demo, displaying messages such as "Voted for Cruelty? Shame on You". Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday.
