On May 6, 2025, during a public City Commission meeting, Mayor Dean Trantalis publicly referenced a letter from:
• Ty Sutton, President & CEO of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts
• Joe Cox, President & CEO of the Museum of Discovery and Science
• Jenni Morejon, President & CEO of the Downtown Development Authority (DDA)
In that letter, they called on the Commission to reconsider late-night liquor sales on Himmarshee, directly blaming the 4 AM licenses for what they described as the “deterioration” of the street and its culture.
Following this, a representative stated that a formal presentation on this issue is coming to the Commission in June, after several meetings with the letter writers and “stakeholders.” These conversations are happening without the bar owners, hospitality workers, and patrons who actually make Himmarshee what it is.
Commissioner Steven Glassman supported the idea, referencing past meetings to “reimagine Himmarshee,” and Mayor Trantalis agreed the district needs a “refresh.”
