Today we all have reason to celebrate our remarkable achievement! 250,000 signatures! A quarter of a million! No other tree petition has ever commanded this many! People everywhere are realising just how important our ancient trees are! If we can gain protection for our most important and oldest ancient ones – the yews, then protecting our other ancient trees and in the end the whole of our precious natural environment should fall into place. But those in power are lagging behind the mood of the people. This is a time to lobby MP’s and political parties and ask them if they will support this campaign, to ask if they will stand behind the really important issues of today, (once Brexit is out of our way!)
Well done English Heritage for recognising the need for legal protection by making the ancient yew at Ankerwycke, Runnymede, site of the Magna Carta, a Scheduled Monument! Now we need to extend this status to other ancient yews central to our culture and history and so I have drawn up a list of ancient yews I would consider to be our Top 12 Heritage Trees. These are:-
1. Ankerwycke, Runnymede.
2. Crowhurst, East Sussex
3. Fortingall, Scotland
4. Borrowdale Yews, Lake District
5. Fountains Abbey Yews, Yorkshire
6. King Yew, Eastwood/Tidenham, Forest of Dean
7. Merddon Castle Yews, Hursley, Hampshire
8. Old Enton Yew, Surrey
9. Knowlton Circles Yew, Dorset
10. West Tisted Yew, Hampshire
11. Ashbrittle Yew, Somerset
12. Uppington Yew, Shropshire
Some of these yews have already been featured on the Campaing Updates but I will introduce the others over the next few weeks so you can see why they are so important for our Heritage and for future generations.
