THE GOLDEN BOUGH
Apr 6, 2019 —
In amongst the chaos, a paradigm shift is taking place, a change of heart, away from what we can take from the Earth to how we can live in balance and promote conditions that are life enhancing for all species. The Campaign for Legal Protection of Ancient Yews in Britain, is essentially about protesting our allegiance to the Tree of Life.
The Golden Bough, is a mystical phenomenon, unseen for 3,000 years and written about by Roman writers such as Virgil and Seneca. It began to reappear at the turn of the millennium on ancient yews of historical significance. Since then, some 15 ancient yews have begun to carry it like a great light or a beacon, demanding our attention. A few examples you can see are at Defynnog (pictured here) Buxted and Much Markle. Please do not take leaves from them. In the ancient story of the Golden Bough, the Trojan hero Aeneas has to find it in the sacred grove, in order to cross the River Styx between the worlds of the living and the dead and must then present it to the Goddess of the Underworld. He is helped in this task by the Sybil of the grove, the seer, and go-between of gods and humans. Protected by this magical bough, he is able to speak to his dead father Anchises and his wife Dido and finally re enter this world, with the knowledge he needs to continue his journey. The Golden Bough is a talisman, a passport, to enable safe passage through this transition. It takes different forms as a sprig, a flame, a golden yellow crown or as a branch whose wood glistens and glitters. It is a spark of hope beckoning from the dark foliage and it has returned.
Our petition is to be presented to DEFRA at Westminster on 25th April. We will meet in Parliament Square at 1.30 where you will find us under our banner. We hope that many of you will come to show support for the rights of the Tree of Life. Meanwhile, please keep signing and sharing the petition.
