Downtown Miami Residents
15 may 2018
A Message from Andres Althabe, President of the Biscayne Neighborhoods Association:
Today at the Miami-Dade County Commission meeting, Vice Chair and downtown Commissioner Audrey Edmonson cited concerns from residents before placing several conditions on a future Formula One race in Miami.
Importantly, Vice Chair Edmonson advocated for the protection of the public open space behind the American Airlines Arena known as Parcel B, which she has in the past worked to make a park-- as was promised to downtown residents. The County Commission barred Parcel B from the negotiation. It won’t be part of the race track.
While the Miami Herald made it seem last week like the Formula One race was a done deal, the leadership of Biscayne Neighborhoods Association-BNA (as well as our partner, the Downtown Neighbors Alliance-DNA) has been working closely with the race promoter and elected officials at every level to make sure the approval process for this event includes residents' input. We expect our advocacy and close attention on this matter to continue.
It is still too early to know the right balance between either the likely positive and/or negative impacts that a Formula One race may have downtown and the city. The race promoter has agreed to work with B.N.A. and D.N.A. to address neighbors' concerns. Regardless, we applaud Commissioner Vice Chair Edmonson's mindfulness of promises made in the past and the fact downtown residents were at the top of her mind.
