I wanted to share a long overdue update with you. After 2.5 years of much hard work, Friends of Lanark Highlands has raised awareness and shared the undeniable facts about the risks of the Highland Line Pit Proposal to the Barbers Lake and Long Sault Creek ecosystems and the community.
As a result of the hot, dry summer, the Mississippi River Watershed has been in a Level 3 (Severe) Low Water Advisory. Needlessly tampering with the water for aggregate extraction would be reckless and could cause irreversible damage.
This could be the first below-water-table gravel pit in Ontario to be only feet away from an alive and vibrant lake. If this is permitted, Ontario is in trouble and no body of water is safe.
It’s a nightmare, but here we are still fighting.
We are making progress. Friends of Lanark Highlands has hired environmental lawyer David Donnelly, joined forces with the Reform Gravel Mining Coalition, and partnered with the Small Change Fund to help protect our community and water.
We continue to move forward and stand strong, but we need your help. In collaboration with Small Change Fund, we are working to raise money to hire expert witnesses and legal counsel to stand strong at the Ontario Land Tribunal.
