The B.C. government is proposing to increase the wolf trapping season on Vancouver Island in a misguided attempt to preserve deer populations. The proposal states that that they are basing the decision on anecdotal information and not on science or any reliable data. The plan is to increase the legal trapping season to 10 months out of the year. "Because of the high costs and challenges with wolf inventory, and their low conservation concern status, limited wolf inventory has been conducted in B.C." The fact is that the last cursory population estimate on wolves was in 1994. The B.C. government is still not recognizing the coastal wolves of Vancouver Island as genetically distinct and globally rare, nor the highly social nature of these family groups or packs. Leg hold traps are inhumane, cruel and should be banned. What can you do? Let the Fish and Wildlife Branch know you oppose the NDP government proposal to lengthen the wolf trapping season on Vancouver Island. Edit and send in the form letter below by January 19th, or write your own if you prefer.
