Parents of Avoca Public School were notified yesterday that the school will be placed into recess commencing Term 2 2025. 

Despite a massive amount of support from our community, and more than 1200 signatures on our petition, the department has made its decision. They have done this without a single consultation with parents or the broader community. 

Our calls to department executives and letters to Minister have gone unacknowledged, except for a copy and pasted pro forma letter telling us how consultative they intend to be. 

We are incredibly disappointed, our children are crushed, and our hearts are breaking for the schools highly professional and dedicated staff who go above and beyond every single day.

The reason given for the planned recess is due to low enrolment numbers. By the enrolment deadline in 2024 Avoca PS had 5 new prospective enrolments in addition to the existing student group. The department refused to accept those enrolments and those children have had to find other schools.

This process has been unfair and unconsultative. The departmentent has demonstrated it had no intention of following its own policies and protocols. Avoca Public School P&C will continue to fight for our essential community asset, and are now considering our options.
