While technology makes our lives easier, it often comes at a price to human beings. Many companies across a variety of industries are relying more and more heavily on machines to do the jobs previously done by human beings. This is especially true in manufacturing where, according to a study conducted by researchers at Ball State University, 88% of the manufacturing jobs lost since 2000 have been taken over by robots and automation.
No, those machines aren’t going away. A recent report by the accounting and consulting firm PwC said that more than 1/3 of U.S. jobs (38%) could be at “high risk” of automation by the early 2030s.
We prefer our retail transactions to have human connections, even if it means waiting a few extra minutes in the checkout line. During this holiday season, we urge you not to use self-checkout machines. Enjoy your interaction with fellow human beings. Tell the store managers at Walmart, CVS, and Target that the personalities of their checkers and baggers are part of their appeal.
