As Hawai’i Island Pets Alive continues multi-front efforts towards improved transparency, effectiveness, and accountability from Hawai’i County Animal Control, we ventured into an endeavor to lessen the immense load of homeless pets on our Island! Through an inspiring collaboration with Action 4 Animals, we’ll be transporting fifty (50) dogs from Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary, located on the Big Island of Hawai’i, to the Arizona Humane Society, giving them a second and exceptional opportunity at a wonderful life.
Between these four (4) unique animal welfare organizations, some incredible volunteers, and a lot of hard work and dedication, this amazing Airlift Campaign – Pets Across the Pacific - is in motion! The first three (3) dogs are scheduled to take flight and land in Arizona on December 21, 2022; with the second set of three (3) landing on the 27th.
If you live on the Big Island or have been following this Petition, you probably understand the huge overpopulation issue of unwanted, stray, and abandoned pets – resulting from decades of an Island-wide broken animal welfare system. All Island animal shelters and rescues, as well as County Animal Control, are at maximum capacity, overwhelmed, and unable to take in any more pets . . . bottom line, there is nowhere these pets can go for shelter and safety.
Rainbow Friends Animal Sanctuary has essentially been the only shelter on the Big Island consistently taking in homeless dogs and cats for the past year. This, as well as other large intakes - such as the 2018 lava flow - has resulted in a severely under-resourced Sanctuary operating beyond capacity.
Arizona Humane Society . . . the safety net!
Arizona Humane Society has graciously offered their assistance with this immediate need by taking on some of the load (i.e., 50 dogs)! With their extensive network and greater reach, they will be taking these dogs under their wings and finding their forever homes. We are beyond grateful for their willingness to work with us for the ultimate purpose of saving lives!
