In Saskatoon, we are at a critical moment where City Council is looking at the possibility of zoning strip clubs. Strip clubs do not add value to our city and sadly, many of the bars where strip clubs would operate are located in family-centred neighbourhoods, such as Nutana or Mayfair. This is not acceptable.
The messages strip clubs send is that enjoyment can come from the sale of (usually women’s) bodies for pleasure. We need to send a strong message to Saskatoon City Council that we oppose this message. We are not willing to tolerate strip clubs in our neighbourhoods where children live and are affected by this unethical social message about women and body image.
The ban on strip clubs has been fought and won. In 2012, Iceland banned strip clubs arguing women – and people in general - should be seen as equal citizens, not something for sale.

Further, when this kind of adult entertainment is present, there is an increase in illicit drug use and gang activity. We are not tolerant of schools, daycares or recreation facilities and community centres that children frequent being close to any of these establishments. In the name of public safety this is an unacceptable proposal in Saskatoon.

We hereby propose that:
Strip clubs cannot be located in any vicinity of up to 500 metres (.5 km) around schools, day cares, or child-frequented facilities that may impress upon children stereotyping or negative imaging about nudity in the “adult entertainment” industry.
