DWP have clarified that Welfare legislation does not cover people in Continuous Healthcare (CHC) because they are considered to be the full-time responsibility of the NHS. The NHS CHC assessment is purely medical and takes no account of a patient's social/emotional mobility needs. So, there is a gap in the system.
Fortunately, the lovely people at Motability charity have been there to catch Andrew when he fell through that gap. So, this campaign has achieved its first objective - saving Andrew's van.
Andrew is a Yorkshire Terrier and he is not going to let the principle drop, so he will now be focusing on how to get the NHS to take responsibility for mobility needs of people in their care. If you have any experience of this or would like to help get in touch through me at woodywoodwork@gmail.com
Finally, thank you all for your support. Andrew has been truly amazed that nearly 40,000 people have been willing to rally to the cause. We went out in the van today to a local buddhist temple and enjoyed the calm and the views. The relief of having the van made the trip all the more enjoyable. It's wonderful what people power can achieve!
Thanks also to 'i' newspaper and BBC Three Counties for their support. Keep an eye out for a follow up article in the 'i' newspaper!
