Stop Culpeper County from Licensing a Commercial Breeding Kennel Operation

To the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors:

I object strenuously to the special permit requested by Emmanuel and Corrie Warren for a kennel license.

Last year the Warrens applied for a kennel license to house 65 dogs in Fauquier County. They withdrew their application right before the Fauquier County Board of Zoning Appeals planned visit to the property. They are presently seeking to establish a kennel in the adjacent county. According to the Culpeper Star Exponent, the Culpeper County Planning Board approved their conditional use permit based upon five conditions, one of which was limiting the number of breeding females to eight. "Both county planner Sam McLaren and Commissioner Sally Underwood agreed that the last two conditions would be tough to enforce.” It is dubious to think the other 57 dogs that were included in the Fauquier County application would be all males dogs used for stud service. I strongly believe that the number of dogs that will be on their premises will far exceed what the planning board perceives.  Commercial breeding operations in the United States produce approximately 2 million puppies per year.  That is the same number of companion animals that are euthanized in this country per year. With these statistics, we don’t need to see any more commercial breeders, especially in our county and in our commonwealth. The only breeders I would like to see are the breeders who have a few litters a year and their animals live in their houses, not in their backyards living in a kennel.  If this commercial breeding kennel is allowed, I will make sure I, along with my friends and family, will not venture into Culpeper County to spend our tourist dollars.  I strongly urge you to deny their request to establish a commercial dog breeding facility.
