Play This Land is Your Land at SF Giants games

The Issue

After 9/11, Major League baseball responded by playing God Bless America at games. In the years since, that tradition has carried on and the song continues to play on assorted holidays and Sundays.  The song served to express the patriotism that many felt after the attacks that September and unified players and fans across the MLB map.

Times have changed.  Our country feels deeply divided and many are feeling unsure if America will continue to be a place where all are welcomed, a place that will live up to the words that so many read as they passed through Ellis Island: Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

The SF Giants are an organization that is not afraid to show courage.  They were the first team to make an "It Gets Better" video to support LGBTQ youth.  They have an opportunity to make a statement that San Francisco, California and the USA is a land that is made for all people.  This petition is requesting that the San Francisco Giants respond to current conditions in the US by playing the bi-lingual version of This Land is Your Land" by Chicano Batman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDzrlnuUxew) on Friday Night home games during the 7th inning stretch.

This is not unprecedented.  The Baltimore Orioles have been playing This Land is Your Land for the past couple of years - recognizing that it is good to represent "a strain of progressivism in American life":

Baseball is an international game that unites people from around the world.  This small gesture will indicate that the SF Giants recognizes that we are all Americans and that this great land is one of openness and opportunity for all.  It will show strong support for players and fans by reaffirming that all people are part of the fabric of America.
