The large Blackwood Acacia tree at 826 Haight St. in San Francisco should not be removed.

A notice was posted on the tree 5/22/17 from the SFDPW Bureau of Urban Forestry indicating plans for removal due to cracks in the sidewalk. This is a shortsighted, unnecessary removal.

Instead of removal of the tree, the basin could be widened and the sidewalk could be repaired without necessitating root pruning which these trees do not respond well to. Additionally, heavy branches could be trimmed and pruned for extra safety. This would be extra effort (in that it requires 2 or 3 things to be done to care for the sidewalk and the tree, rather than simply cut it down) that would greatly benefit the aesthetics of this neighborhood and valuable tourist corridor.

This is a healthy tree with many good years left before it becomes a safety issue.

Many people in the neighborhood appreciate the beauty and shade of this tree.

We the undersigned hereby protest the removal of the tree and urge the Bureau of Urban Forestry to pursue a non-destructive alternative.

(In addition to signing this petition, please consider emailing urbanforestry@sfdpw.org and telling them you protest the removal of the tree at 826 Haight. -- deadline 6/21/17)
