Mayor Nassif and Council,

We appreciate all of the recent changes that have been implemented at AVAS. I’ve had several conversations with the staff this week and they have been helpful in updating the networkers on the status of the animals. I know that Christie skipped the staff luncheon on Friday, in order to process the rescue/adoption requests for the animals, and I commend her on her efforts. She also granted extensions on the dogs who were supposed to be killed on Friday, and again we appreciate that.

That being said, I want to bring the above mentioned puppy to your attention. Please see her pics/info below. Per Christie, this puppy was adopted out to be a service animal and returned because she was “nipping.” Anyone who understands the GSD/Malinois breed, should know that they do NOT make good service animals and MUST be trained at an infant age of 8 weeks with a professional trainer. The GSD/Malinois breed are KNOWN to be mouthy and nip while in the puppy stage, so if not trained properly they will continue to do so. This puppy (who was not given a name) is around 10 months old. This breed specific info should have been communicated to the adopter, prior to releasing the animal into their custody. Was this info communicated? Was the adopter aware that this particular breed is not normally trained to be a service animal? Since she was returned, I would have to venture a guess and say that the adopter was probably not aware. Now this puppy faces being killed tomorrow, if she does not have a firm commitment from a rescue by 3pm. Puppies take more work and need a foster who is familiar with this breed. So while having a bit more time to find her a home is appreciated, this is a holiday weekend and most people are not going to be interested in saving the life of a puppy.

I’m either asking for more time to help the networkers place the puppy with a rescue, or for someone in your community to temporarily take the puppy in until we can find her a long-term foster, rescue and /or adopter. This puppy does not deserve to die because there was a lack of communication with the adopter. Please help me save her life. See below…
