Urge Adam Smith, Chair of House Armed Services Committee, To End Wasteful Military Spending

In 2018 the United States spent about $700 billion on its military, more than the next eleven countries combined. Over 50% of federal discretionary spending goes to the Pentagon. Meanwhile, other federal agencies, such as the State Department, have seen major cuts.

The 2018 attempt to audit the Pentagon failed. The Pentagon could not account for $21 trillion in budget items and the Pentagon buried evidence of about $125 billion in waste.

The Pentagon spends over a billion dollars a year on public relations in the U.S.

According to Professor David Wise, author of Base Nation, the United States maintains around 800 military bases in more than 70 countries and territories abroad.

We cannot afford this level of spending -- not when there is $21 trillion in national debt, and not when there are so many other pressing needs, such as healthcare, investments in Infrastructure, mitigating the dire effects of climate change, jobs training, veterans services and student loans.

U.S. wars in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Indonesia, Libya, Syria, South America and elsewhere killed millions of people, wasted trillions of dollars, created enemies, and caused massive suffering. Many of these wars were launched for questionable or fraudulent reasons and ended up supporting repressive regimes. These wars resulted in extensive displacement and migration, and consequent destabilization of societies in the Middle East, Europe, and the Americas.

A 2014 Gallup poll of 65 nations found that the United States was far and away the country considered the largest threat to peace in the world, and a Pew poll in 2017 found majorities in most countries polled viewing the United States as a threat.

We need to put an end to profligate military spending and to an aggressive foreign policy.

Please urge Rep. Adam Smith (D - WA, 9th CD), to oppose any increase in the Pentagon budget and to aggressively investigate military expenditures. Rep. Adam Smith serves as the Chair of the House Armed Services Committee. He has expressed reasonable doubts about continued high military spending and will come under tremendous pressure from arms manufacturers and from the military establishment to continue giving more and more money to the Pentagon.

Please sign this petition to urge Rep. Smith to oppose any increase in the Pentagon budget and to aggressively investigate military budgeting.

In the words of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., "Those of us who love peace must organize as effectively as the war hawks. As they spread the propaganda of war, we must spread the propaganda of peace.”
