On Monday, April 29th, the Spokane City Council voted to add the Public Safety Levy to the ballot. But before they did so, they revised the purpose of the levy as follows:
"(a) Purpose. The amounts collected from the levy lid lift authorized by the Proposition shall be used to fund public safety operations."
to
"(a) Purpose. The amounts collected from the levy lid lift authorized by the Proposition shall be used to fund community safety operations including capital and operations enhancements for the Spokane Police Department, Fire Department, Municipal Court, Office of Police Ombudsman, and Community Resiliency, which includes emergency management, traffic safety and safe streets."
This is a seismic shift in how our city views public safety and a testament to your commitment to improving traffic safety.
But there is still much work to be done. We must now focus our efforts on ensuring as much funding from this levy goes to safe streets projects as possible.
To that end, volunteers with Spokane Reimagined (spokanereimagined.org) will be standing along the Bloomsday route this Sunday, to memorialize the two pedestrians who lost their lives along the route in 2023.
If you would like to join us, please meet at the following locations:
Riverside Avenue and Wall Street - 8:30 AM - 10:45 AM
Pettet Drive and Augusta Avenue - 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM
If you're running the race, please stop and say hi!
Thank you!
