Remove Rickshaws from London streets

The Issue

Rickshaws are dangerous to passengers and members of the public. They don’t have criminal checks so anyone can ride one of them. They cause congestion to already busy london roads. They not regulated at all so in case of complain there is nowhere to go for passengers. Most rickshaws are fitted with engine which means by law they have to have insurance and number plate.

Previous major Boris Johnson has asked to be given the power to remove rickshaws. So its now time for Sadiq Khan and Theresa May to use their powers and remove these illegal rickshaws of our London roads.

Dear Petitioner Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website about removing rickshaws from London streets. As set out in the Mayor’s Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan, legislation is urgently required to bring pedicabs in London within Transport for London’s (TfL) regulatory framework so that they are subject to its licensing standards and enforcement powers. Being able to control, regulate, and ban unsafe pedicabs is essential for public safety and for dealing with the significant congestion and public nuisance that they cause, especially in the West End. In 2016, the Government announced that it would bring forward new legislation that would bring pedicabs within TfL's regulatory framework. The recently released Task and Finish Group report from the Department for Transport has reiterated the need for Government to make these changes. The Mayor will continue to press the Government to honour its commitment. Frustratingly, the Government has yet to come forward with specific legislative proposals. In the meantime, we continue to support the Metropolitan Police Service in dealing with unsafe and anti-social pedicabs, but our powers will be extremely limited until new legislation is introduced to allow us to effectively regulate pedicabs in London. Yours sincerely Public Liaison Officer Greater London Authority

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Conservative Party
