Free transport for 18-21 year olds in London

Free transport for 18-21 year olds in London

The Issue

Transport in London is becoming increasingly expensive. Students from age 18-21 are forced to pay the same price as adults in the working world. This is unfair as we are already in debt from our student loans and attending university. When we come back to our home in London we cannot go anywhere as the prices for transport are too high. Due to this, I believe transport should be free for young people age 18-21 years old.

I go to the Univeristy of Essex, and sometimes I can't return to my home in London to visit as the cost for transport is too much. This issue affects my social life which transcends into my emotional and mental state.

The Decision Makers

Sadiq Khan
Mayor of London
Responded
Dear Petitioner Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website calling for free travel for people aged between 18-21 years old. The Mayor fully appreciates that these are difficult times economically for Londoners in all walks of life. This is why one of his main manifesto commitments was to freeze Transport for London (TfL) fares for the entirety of his time in office. This will make life easier for millions of people and will ensure that London becomes a more affordable city for all. The Mayor has also introduced a new Bus Hopper fare so customers can change buses within one hour without paying another fare. The Mayor also provides a range of concessions in London, including reduced fares for children and young people. This includes free travel for children under 11 and child fares between the age of 11 and 15. Young people aged 16 and 17 retain free travel on TfL bus services and pay half adult fares on tube and rail, which helps them travel to college or part-time jobs. The 18+ Student Oyster photocard already gives reduced-rate travel to help students in London get to college in London each day. To be eligible for the 18+ student discount, students must live at a London address during term time and be enrolled on a full-time course of at least 15 tuition-led and/or structured learning hours a week (with attendance at scheduled classes being between Monday to Friday only, not including evening classes). You will appreciate that there are many worthy calls for free or discounted travel. TfL is a publicly-funded organisation and as such, it needs to use its limited funding in the most effective way. Given TfL already provides generous discounts for full-time students in London, I am afraid it does not have any current plans to introduce free travel on its services for university students studying outside London.
