Tell the Federal Government to provide adequate resources and proper Conservation officers to deal with the influx of wildlife in our cities.

There are only two conservation officers for all of southern Vancouver Island.  There are a minimum of four calls per day just for wild animals in the greater Victoria area.

Police are not trained to deal with wildlife rescue.

Who decides weather an animal should live or die?

It happens almost every day in Greater Victoria.

A police officer forced to shoot a injured deer.

But today, as Mary Griffin reports, witnesses say they were shocked by what they saw when a Victoria police officer was forced to put a deer down.

And a warning, some viewers may find some of the images in this story disturbing.

Deer Ones

On September 30 ,2016 I witnessed something terrible . I was driving down Esquimalt Rd in Victoria B.C , around 9:30 in the morning happily singing along to the music on the radio when I was stopped by a police man in the middle of the road stopping traffic. As I looked over towards the side of the road and I saw an officer with his weapon drawn moving towards the bushes . I thought , what's going on here , thinking something very serious was going on like a armed criminal or domestic dispute . I immediately wished I had taken a different route . Since I
was stuck in a line of vehicles I could not turn around , I watched this officer shoot into the bushes , then to my astonishment a deer jumped out into the middle of the road scared and wounded and then collapsed onto its' back with its' legs up in the air twitching . The officer controlling traffic beckoned for us to move along . Stunned and not believing what I had just witnessed I parked my car a block away and ran towards this helpless , suffering deer.

By the time I got to the deer I watched helplessly as the officers dragged it still alive to the side of the road and lay it on the lawn of an apartment building . By this time there was a lot of people standing around . This is a neighbourhood with lots of families and working people. I started to question the officers ,"what are you doing ? What are you doing ?" begging them to stop . People started to film on their iPhones . I said to the officer this is not right , please stop and he said they
had no choice the deer was already injured and needed to be shot . I replied the deer is injured now after you shot it and now it's lying there suffering . What are you doing ???? He asked me to back up and then they shot that deer in the neck in front of me and a bunch of people and it died and finally was put out of its' misery .

This experience has prompted me to ask the following questions . I want to know who determines whether an animal is too hurt to save , the police or a conservation officer ? Why wasn't a conservation officer on the scene ? Why did it take three bullets to kill the deer ? Why was the public recklessly endangered ? Are police officers allowed to shoot and kill animals without a conservation officer present. Do we treat animals like Criminals when they are hurt ?

I want to raise public awareness regarding the lack of conservation officers on Vancouver Island . I want humane methods used in dealing with wounded or misplaced animals. If the police are going to be doing the job of a conservation officer then they need to be trained to humanly kill an animal and not to endanger the public with improper methods.
