I wanted to share an update on Sabrina’s case, as this petition was originally inspired by State v. Horner. Jason was sentenced yesterday. Many people submitted victim impact statements—some entered into the record, others read aloud in the courtroom. Mine was read by the Assistant Attorney General, Mary, because I wasn’t confident I could get through it without becoming overwhelmed or angry. He received an 18-year sentence with credit for time served. However, in Minnesota, individuals typically serve only two-thirds of their sentence before being released on parole. Two-thirds of 18 years would be 12 years. But with 933 days of jail credit as of today, Jason will serve approximately 9.5 more years in prison before being released on parole—assuming he earns “good time” and does not incur disciplinary issues. His anticipated release date is in June of 2035. He also has two pending first-degree narcotics sales charges in other counties, though it is unclear at this point how—if at all—those cases will impact his total incarceration. We are heartbroken. Sabrina’s life had far more value than this sentence reflects. We are angry—and that anger is fuel. Fuel for change. What stands out most right now is the response. Hundreds of people are just as outraged as we are, and many have expressed a real desire to see change in Minnesota. If this sentence outrages you—and it should—I encourage you to get involved. There are bills that cannot even get hearings due to lack of support. There are people—yes, everyday citizens—with solid ideas and real potential to change our laws and our systems. Pressure your elected officials to do something. Write letters. Send emails. Make phone calls. It doesn’t have to be formal or polished. It doesn’t have to sound “professional.” As long as you can speak logically, honestly, and respectfully about your concerns, someone will listen. Make them work for you. One voice is easy to dismiss.
