This is a picture of the current plan for the 'new Tonsley station' which was given to me by Hon Annabel Digance MP, Member for Elder on 23 February 2018 along with a Press Release of Hon Stephen Mullighan MP, Minister for Transport. You can read the Press Release on the previous petition update "Tonsley Station on FIVEaa Breakfast with David & Will": https://www.change.org/p/sa-minister-for-transport-save-tonsley-station-save-our-access-to-public-transport/u/22463484
was having trouble uploading a photo of the plan to this petition update (kept getting error messages). You can also view the plan on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155722421348355&set=p.10155722421348355&type=3
Meanwhile I will keep trying to upload the photo here.
You can see from this plan that the 'new Tonsley station' is next to Alawoona Avenue. This plan is not new. This plan was created in response to a proposal in 2012 to "build a new Clovelly Park station".
The existing Clovelly Park station is at Alawoona Avenue on the northern side of the street and the new station is planned for the southern side of the street. The only difference between 2012 and now is that now the DPTI is renaming the proposed new Clovelly Park station and calling it 'the new Tonsley station'.
The upgrade of Clovelly Park station is overdue - both Clovelly Park and Tonsley stations were meant to be upgraded as part of the Seaford/Tonsley line electrification works in 2015.
For residents in the southern section of Mitchell Park and Tonsley, the proposed station in this plan is still out of pedestrian reach for many, able-bodied people and those with disabilities.
If the existing Tonsley station must go, then an acceptable compromise for southern residents might be a merging of Clovelly Park and Tonsley stations with the new station south of Handley Avenue, Mitchell Park, to be accessed from Mitchell Park via a pedestrian crossover along the southern half of Woodland Road, ideally at the southern corner of Woodland Road. Tonsley residents would need to have a pathway to access from Ash Avenue, Tonsley.
This is just one of the suggestions that local residents have been forwarding to the Flinders Link project team over the past 8 months. What do you think? Feel free to leave comments at the end of this update.
If you want to see where the proposed 'new Tonsley station' will be, you can visit the site and see the disability access car parks already laid out along the eastern side of the railway track just south of Alawoona Avenue in the western car park of the Tonsley Innovation Precinct (former Mitsubishi site).
These car parks have been there since the car park was resurfaced for the new TAFE and Flinders University complex at Tonsley and have been there for at least 3 years already. Those accessible car parks are nowhere near the TAFE or University buildings. Those parking bays could only be to serve a new railway station.
According to the plan shown here, the southern end of the platform of the new station will be next to the southern boundary of the line of parking bays alongside the railway track. This is still too far north for easy pedestrian access for southern residents.
This new station illustrated in this plan is really a REPLACEMENT CLOVELLY PARK STATION and NOT A SUITABLE REPLACEMENT FOR THE EXISTING TONSLEY STATION and its commuters.
Annabel Digance MP encouraged me to distribute this plan so if you would like a closer look, you can contact Annabel Digance herself (contact details on the main petition page) or email me at savetonsleystation@gmail.com .
