I do not have powers to ban the mass release of Sky Lanterns, but I have been asking the American organisers Viive Events to cancel the LightsFest at Buxton Raceway for 2 weeks with no response.
I contacted the Fire Service who have put on record their opposition to the event and High Peak Council who have refused a music licence.
According to the organisers' own guidelines to work with the fire authority at each event, they cannot now go ahead at Buxton.
I understand Buxton Raceway are waiting to hear from America if a formal decision to cancel has been made. Similar events at Leicester and Locherbie have recently been cancelled.
The company organised this event and sold tickets without seeking any permissions first, as they seem to do in America where tickets are not refunded. My colleagues Angie Raynor, Jonny Reynolds, Debbie Abrahams and I have called on Viive Events to notify ticket holders and refund them so they do not turn up at the Raceway on 28th.
